° Bring the excitement, romance, and gaiety of the 1920s, 30s and 40s to your next function!
° Plan a "WWII Stage Door Canteen - Big Band Swing Night".
° Plan a Prohibition Era Cotton Club Evening with gangsters and molls
° Plan an afternoon "Great Gatsby Lawn Party" or "Tango Tea".
° How about a formal Victorian Turn-of-the-Century Ragtime Ball?
° What about a "Titanic Embarkation Party"? or a "Roaring '20s Gaslight Saloon"? "A Night in Old Havana"? "On a Tropic Isle"?
° Let HOTS bring the festivities to life!
Featured Music
HOTS features such diverse composers and arrangers as Scott Joplin, W.C.
Handy, Jellyroll Morton, Eubie Blake, Fats Waller, Spencer Williams,
Fletcher Henderson, Bennie Moten, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Bennie
Goodman, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Louis Jordan, and Louis Prima. We offer
delightful journeys back to the Naughty '90s, the Roaring '20s, the Jazz Age
'30s, and Swing Era '40s, complete with period costumes, instrumentation,
and arrangements. The music is rhythmic and exciting, the melodies are
tuneful and familiar, and most important, HOTS generates fun and excitement.
Our music is challenging, entertaining, and finds an enthusiastic and
sympathetic audience everywhere.
HOTS' instrumentation includes trumpets, trombones, tuba, flutes, clarinets, saxophones, banjo or guitar, bass viol, piano and drums. We can be augmented to include strings and other instruments. Several specialty sub-groups can be formed (Dixieland, ragtime, polka, civil war, etc.) We prefer to play as a full 15 piece dance orchestra, but if necessary, we can slim down to as few as eight performers.

Dance Program |
We play the full range of U.S. and International-style modern ballroom dance rhythms: fox-trots, quicksteps, waltzes, polkas, swing (lindy, shag, jitterbug, boogie-woogie), and Latin (rumba, tango, cha-cha, merengue, samba, mambo, bossa-nova, bolero, paso doble). Our repertoire includes vintage ragtime, New Orleans-style Dixieland jazz, '20s hot dance tunes (Charleston, Black Bottom, Shimmy), and classic '30s - '40s big band swing standards.
We can design our program to cover a wide period of time - "Mardi Gras in New Orleans," or to concentrate on a narrower period: "Gay Nineties." You pick the period...1890s through 1940s...and we'll create a program to suit you. (For very special occasions such as weddings, we need to know well in advance if there are particular favorite tunes or ethnic styles (Jewish, Polish, Italian, etc.) which we'll need to prepare.
HOTS can arrange a one-hour, pre-dance program of instruction in the dance steps of the era, such as the Cake Walk, Fox-Trot, Waltz, Rumba, Tango, Maxixe, Schottisch, Polka, Charleston, Black bottom, Varsity Drag, Shag, Lindy Hop and Jitterbug. We can bring along line dance or swing dance instructors and demonstrators and other vaudeville entertainment.
To see what we might play for you, please take a look at our typical set lists for our dances.

Concert Program HOT'S shows includes both male and female vocalists or groups performing Victorian parlor ballads, barbershop harmonies, low-down Bessy Smith blues, steamy torch songs, Tin Pan Alley pop novelties, and leading audience sing-alongs of the songs we all remember. Our dancers perform the Charleston, Black Bottom, Shimmy, tap, jitterbug, shag, swing, Lindy Hop and other vintage dances, so there is something to watch as well as to listen to. |

Parade Unit HOTS marches as the New Reliance Brass Band (New Orleans-style jazz) in all major Washington DC-area civic parades. HOTS can march while it's sponsor fields a "Second Line" of gaily-clad strutters twirling colorful parasols, or can serenade as a uniformed gazebo concert band of the sunny John Philip Sousa military and circus band days. |
