Laurie Mielke
Flute

Laurie always wanted to play the flute but hit middle age before the repressed musician inside began emerging. First came recorder studies with Suzana Cooper.   In the 90's, Laurie started folk dancing and playing recorder for English country dances.  Finally, she began the flute, studying with Marty Taylor and Barbara Heitz.  She has attended Early Music Week at Pinewoods, numerous dance band workshops and plays with a librarians' music ensemble.   Among sources of encouragement for late blooming musicians, she heartily recommends the book NEVER TOO LATE: MY MUSICAL LIFE STORY, by John Holt.  Laurie joined New Hots Jazz Orchestra in 2004
